Central Ontario Building Trades Council (COBT) is formed by the 25 construction craft unions representing 40,000 members. These unions have been in existence for over 100 years. Over the years many organizations have asked the construction trades for assistance in helping others (Habitat For Humanity is but one example). With a collective of highly skilled trades persons and the ability to mobilize workers to volunteer it became apparent that the construction trades should create a non-profit organization to help others in need. Combine these assets with a strong relationship with contractors and suppliers, COBT was in a great position to provide assistance to our communities.
To this end, the Central Ontario Community Builders (COCB) was born. COCB is an independent non-profit organization that s dedicated to rebuilding communities in need of assistance. Community Builders is made up of a group of highly trained professional trades people. These professionals volunteer their time and expertise to help rebuild the homes of victims who have no other source of assistance.
Shortly after founding COCB, the COBT through its Business Manager (Jay Peterson), was contacted by the Premier of Ontario the RT Honorable Dalton McGuinty, requesting assistance from the construction industry for the victims of the Peterborough flood disaster. COCB assured the Premier that immediate assistance was available to the community in need.
